RIP: Artist John Schoenherr

Discover Magazine reports that John Schoenherr died yesterday. I haven't found other other confirmation of it, but the report looks credible.

Further information about Schoenherr and his work.

Update: Confirmation received from Jane Yolen and also from Ian Schoenherr's blog.

I remember his work from Analog very well. I'm sorry to hear this.

The blog post is fairly light on the parts of him that are famous in our field, but there's no doubt it's the same person. Looks like a credible report to me, sadly, too.

Schoenherr
At his best, he was an amazing artist. I have no recollection of him ever being at less than his best. (Does anybody but me remember an *Analog* cover called *Heavy Planet Design*? It was a rhinoceros-like beastie with six legs. John W. Campbell had said in the previous issue that it was supposed to be three or four feet tall.)

Re: Schoenherr
This is not the same painting at all. The one I am thinking of was quite plainly marked "Heavy Planet Design" and I think it was somewhat earlier.

Thank you
David and Judith, I'm pretty sure I don't know either one of you, but thank you so much for coming through with this wonderful cover painting. Schoenherr's illos for *Astounding* and *Analog* (notably the covers) were such a big part of my adolescence; yeah, I was a fan of the stories in the magazines, but it would have been a completely different situation without the illustrations, and Schoenherr's were among the best. (And thanks to you too, Geri, for the update and the links.)

Jane Yolen reported his death on Facebook, as did DDB.

Only became aware of him relatively recently, but yeah, he was good. He did himself proud in the field.
