With deepest sympathies...

...to sleigh, parsleigh, Dave Locke, and so many, many more friends and fans.

It's too beautiful a day to learn that Bill Bowers died last night. Way too beautiful. The beauty is still there, of course; it's just wrong. There's rain in my heart. Rain, soft and regretful and sad.

I wish...so many things. Most of all, that Bill had been able to live the last 15 years of his life without being disabled by profound health problems. That his last 15 years were still a thing of the future. The distant future. I wish romance had served him better, too.

He was kind. He was always glad to see me. And I him. We were never close, but he was a pillar of my community, and our roof is weakened by our loss. It's letting the rain through. Soft and regretful and sad.

Bill Bowers
This is a name out of my early days in fandom. I ran into him and Bill Mallardi at both the 1964 and 1966 worldcons; they did a fanzine called *Double: Bill* and I must admit to being a bit miffed that, though I gave them money as per what some genzines of that era took from subscribers, they never actually added me to the mailing list. I do remember them both as being highly intelligent and likable people, and am certainly not surprised that Mr. Bowers had a lot of friends who will miss him. I hadn't heard his name at all in some years, though, so this whole thing is surprising, as well as cause for grief.

Like Nate, I met Bill long ago, at my first convention, in 1970. Unlike Nate, I've stayed in touch with Bill over the years and watched with much concern and sadness as his health fell to pieces. He was a mighty fan writer, the mightiest of faneds, and a master mimeographer. A few years ago he paid me the highest compliment I could ever hope for from him: he praised my own modest mimeo skills and named me the finest mimeographer in current fandom.

Dang.
