Travels of an M-State Girl: Home

2,462 miles.

23 nights.

8 beds, 1 sofa. There's a fanzine article in a review of them. Too bad I didn't take pictures. Then again, I'd gladly go back to any and all. Well, except maybe the leaky waterbed. Three separate leaks in six nights suggests the mattress may not be long for this world. Its replacement will be a blessing. Soggy flannel sock monkey swinging on a star PJs are far from just the thing, even when the waterbed heater keeps them warm.

Loved ones, friends and family all.

New axle, new water pump, notification that a new catalytic converter is needed, too.

New desktop computer. Repaired laptop.

(The laptop traveled even further, accompanying me for 18 of the 23 nights, and jaunting off mid-trip from Michigan to Texas for an Apple Spa Treatment: new logic board, Superdrive, battery, keyboard, trackpad, and top case before being whisked to Chicago. I caught up with it there.)

No Minnesota. (Whimper. Big whimper.) Milwaukee was as close as I got.

Best moment report coming separately.

I'm glad I traveled. It's good to be home.

I'm glad you made it to Chicago, my dear, but sorry to hear about the catalytic converter. Crap. And I like the icon; you look rather fierce and Irish.

Oh, wait ....

Thank you, dear.

You're more astute than you know. The cropped out bit from the self-portrait establishes that it was taken at Warrior Point Beach on the west side of Pyramid Lake. It's a marvelous place -- alien but also iconic Wild West, right up until the point that the Tim Powers' sky kicks in. Really.

Pyramid Lake is on Indian land -- Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe -- not very far outside Reno, NV. I'll try to post photos from my short visit there soon.

Having hardly ever driven under snow&ice conditions, I've heaved a sigh of relief & gratitude that you're home safely. Now you can look back on the trip and enjoy the pleasant memories (and ignore the few less-than-enjoyable moments). And, of course, you can now buckle-down to work-type tasks to pay the bills. (*sigh*) But remember -- back on The Diet as soon as The Holidays are over.

I really oughtn't wait until after the Holidays to get back to the Eating Sensibly and Moving More routine, not after what I did to my body during those 24 days on the road! Yes, I was moving more than usual -- on the step-counter and not just behind the wheel -- but I ended up eating even more than that. Ouch!

Next time I wish I could ride shotgun with you, at least part of the way. I have a friend in Des Moines that I really should visit.
