Progress...well, some...

The desktop iMac is running noticeably faster. I don't think it's just that I cleared off 100 GB worth of files; the biggest improvement came in the first 30 GB which also happened to represent lots (and lots and lots) of little files.

It still wanders off into its own version of Never-Never Land from time to time, but when it's not doing that, the responsiveness is downright zippy. Alas, the wandering off seems most prone to happening when searching for a file, which means I'm right back where I started 7 or so hours ago: trying to find a font I'm certain I purchased this past Spring, one that I need to use for one of the two pressing projects.

Fun fun, joy joy. Not.

It is such a colossal pain to clear out overloaded computers. I wish you luck.

Truth!

Thanks for the luck your wish sent my way.

Forgive me if this is elementary advice that you would have of course already done, but my brother always says that I should run Disk Utility to verify and repair File Permissions as a first step. Good luck!

No worries.

"Repair Permissions" has been my go-to starting point since Jeff and I were still living together and he was my Mac (and everything else) tech guy. I even read the Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore for fun. :-)

Are your backups searchable such that you might enlist your laptop to search them for the font?

Due to ancient bad experience, I tend to keep file sharing turned off between my computers. But I searched the laptop and its back-ups high and low as well as searching from several different directions on the desktop. It took me one persistent misspelling and a mere 7 hours (accompanied by much other useful work) to conclude that my memory was wrong. Sure enough, my hard copy business receipts demonstrated the exact amount I remembered spending went toward a font purchased for a different convention!
